In 1974, sixteen person hand crews were established by BLM Alaska to travel between remote stations in the Kenai, McGrath, Tanacross, Fairbanks, and other locations, to suppress fires. Alaska Fire Service's Interagency Hotshot Crew program began with those crews.
Alaska Fire Service was established in 1982 at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, on the outskirts of Fairbanks. Two Type 1 Interagency Hotshot Crews (Chena and Midnight Sun) were established two years later. Originally housed in an excess military barracks, the crews moved to their current home in 1992. Other notable facility changes include a new barracks in 2005.
Since 1987, Chena has detailed to locations primarily in California and Idaho as well as Utah and Nevada. Prior to 1993, Alaska IHC's occasionally combined crews for lower 48 fire assignment. For fire seasons 1993, 1997, and 2004 the crew did not go south on lower 48 fire assignment. Currently the Idaho BLM State office hosts the crew during the later part of an average fire season. Since 2005, the crew has detailed to the lower 48 every year.
